Different Ways To Remove Warts

If you struggle with warts on the feet, we can help. Foot warts are known as plants warts and several options are available for removing them. The board-certified podiatrists at Podiatric Associates of Northwest Ohio in Toledo, Maumee, and Wauseon OH, treat warts and can recommend the best way to remove plantar warts from the feet.

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts often form on the soles of the feet but can appear anywhere on the feet, including the toes. They often appear in clusters on the foot and are typically rough, hard, and scaly. Plantar warts sometimes also have tiny black dots in the center, which are actually clotted blood vessels. Plantar warts are not always painful, but can cause discomfort on the bottom of the foot when walking.

Plantar warts are caused by a virus that prompts the body to produce excess keratin in the top layer of the skin. The excess keratin results in the formation of warts. Walking around barefoot at a public pool, locker room, or other damp area increases the risk of developing plantar warts on the feet. Plantar warts tend to be more common in kids and teens, as well as individuals with a compromised immune system.

Wart Removal

It is possible for warts to eventually go away on their own, but that can take a long time. Additionally, warts can spread to other areas so it is best to treat them rather than ignore them to prevent the warts from spreading.

Several effective options are available for treating and warts on the feet. The experienced podiatrists at our offices in Toledo, OH & Maumee, OH, remove warts using the following methods:

  • Salicylic acid and cantharidin solution — Applied topically in the doctor's office every 2 weeks. It works by removing several layers of the wart at a time.
  • Liquid nitrogen or Verruca Freeze — Freezes the wart so it dries and falls off. It can take 2-3 treatment sessions to completely remove the wart.
  • Surgical removal — This is done in the office under local anesthesia. Completely cutting out the wart. It is best to stay off the feet for a day afterward to avoid putting stress on the treatment area.
  • CO2 laser treatment — This is done in an outpatient setting under anesthesia to remove the warts.
